After my webinar yesterday, someone asked me a question I hear quite often:
“Should I be posting on LinkedIn to help me land a job?”
My answer?
You don’t need to become a LinkedIn influencer to get hired.
Seriously.
You’ve spent 15, 20, maybe even 25 years building your career.
The last thing you need is another full-time job creating content, chasing likes, and trying to figure out what the LinkedIn algorithm wants.
Don’t get me wrong. Posting can absolutely help increase your visibility.
But it’s not where I’d recommend you start.
Here’s what matters more:
1. Make sure your profile positions you for where you want to GO, not just where you’ve BEEN.
Your profile shouldn’t simply read like a history of your career.
It needs to clearly communicate your expertise, the value you bring, and the roles you’re targeting.
And it needs the right keywords so recruiters can actually FIND you.
2. Focus on building the RIGHT relationships.
Connect with people at your target companies. Engage in relevant conversations. Build relationships with decision-makers.
This is how you start tapping into opportunities that may never even hit a job board.
3. THEN think about posting.
If you have something valuable to share, great!
Posting can help reinforce your expertise and increase your visibility.
But it’s an amplifier, not the foundation of your job search.
And it’s certainly not a requirement.
Here’s the bigger picture:
A successful job search isn’t just about finding opportunities.
It’s about positioning yourself so the RIGHT opportunities can find YOU.
And that starts long before you hit “Post.”
Here’s a quick exercise for today:
Take a look at your LinkedIn headline.
If a recruiter were searching for someone to fill your ideal role, would your headline help them find you?
And if they clicked through, would your profile make a compelling case for why they should reach out?
If not, that’s where I’d start. 😉
P.S. Spending time on LinkedIn but not getting the interviews or opportunities you want?
You may not need to do MORE. You may need a better strategy.
