It’s not just about networking, here’s why…

I’m sure you’ve heard many job search experts and people around you say over and over again that:

“Getting hired for a new amazing role is all about who you know, it’s all about networking”.

And my take on it is this:

YES and NO.

Gaining access to opportunities via your network definitely works.

And it can sometimes be the fastest way to land a new role.

Yet I believe focusing solely on networking as your entire job search strategy is a huge mistake!!!

Here’s why:

It can be hit-and-miss.

❌ What if people in your network currently aren’t aware of any open roles in your field?

❌ What if your current network is small? It can take some time to build it further…

❌ What if it’s a time of year when people are super busy and don’t get back to you when you reach out?

❌ What if all that rejection stops you dead in your tracks and you start procrastinating on networking?

This can seriously slow down your search.

It can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t network to get a new role.

After all, that’s where the hidden job market lies, where 70% of job opportunities are found.

But why should you then completely ignore the 30% of job opportunities that are posted online?

Most of these are current, actual job openings.

Ignoring these makes absolutely no sense to me.

I recently spoke to someone who had hired a job search coaching company to help him land a new role.

Their entire focus was 100% on networking. They had him network and talk to over 100 people in just a few short weeks…

The result: a big fat nothing.

His entire search relied solely on networking and it was a complete miss.

This is why I recommend that you don’t put all your job search eggs into one thing.

I suggest having a strategic and diversified approach to job searching.

It includes applying to roles online – in a strategic, focused, and deliberate way.

And most importantly, with a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile that will get results!

I see it all the time with my clients.

Once they have those documents dialed in for the role they want, and with the strategic approach I teach, they stand out and get interviews and offers from those online applications.

A diversified job search strategy is what gets you hired more quickly.

It doesn’t have to take more time when you have a proven and systematic system to generate interviews and offers.

This gets me fired up.

It pains me to see job seekers slow themselves down needlessly.
