While the job market in North America seems ok “on paper”, the reality for professionals looking for a new role right now tells a different story.

Talk to anyone who’s been on the market over the last few months and you’ll hear stories like….

“I’ve never had such a hard time landing interviews in my entire career”

“I’ve submitted over 500 applications, got 5 interviews for roles that pay ½ of what I was making before”

“I’ve been job searching for 6 months and can’t seem to get any traction, the hiring process is taking so long!”

“I want to change companies as my company now has a return to office mandate but I can’t seem to find anything that would be a good fit, let alone secure interviews for the few roles that look to be a match”

There are signs that the market will improve over the next few months.

But what do you do to keep your sanity in the meantime if you’re actively job searching due to a layoff or in a soul-sucking role?

Here are 4 ways to stay sane through this period:

1- Establish a routine

Having a structured daily routine can provide a sense of normalcy and control.

Dedicate specific hours of the day to job searching, networking, and skill development.

Equally important, allocate time for relaxation, exercise, and activities that bring you joy.

Action Step: Create a daily schedule that balances job search activities with self-care and leisure.

2- Leverage your network

Don’t hesitate to lean on your support network during this time.

Reach out to friends, family, and former colleagues for advice, encouragement, and potential job leads.

Sometimes, just talking about your experiences can alleviate stress and provide new insights.

Action Step: Schedule regular time with supportive people in your life and, find ways to expand your network and gain additional support and insights.

3- Practice self-care

Prioritize your physical and mental well-being.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices like meditation can significantly impact your mood and energy levels.

Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused and resilient.

Action Step: Incorporate at least one self-care activity into your daily routine, such as a short walk, meditation session, or a hobby you enjoy.

4- Seek professional guidance

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, consider seeking help from a career coach.

A coach can provide personalized advice, support, and proven strategies to fast-track your job search and boost your confidence.

Action Step: Schedule a consultation with us to discuss your job search challenges and goals and see how we can help.

These are some of the things that kept me sane when I got suddenly laid off in a tough market years ago.
