I used to think “overqualified” was a compliment.
Until I heard it five times in a row.
And didn’t get the job.
Each time, it felt like rejection wrapped in praise.
“You have such strong experience…”
“Your background is impressive, but…”
“We’re concerned you might get bored…”
What they were really saying was:
“We can’t see how you fit.”
It wasn’t about my age.
It wasn’t about having too much experience.
It was about how I was presenting that experience.
I was giving them my entire career history, when all they needed to hear was how I’d solve their current problem.
They also needed to hear how excited I was at the prospect of helping them reach their goals.
And that this role was the exact next step in my career, and why.
Once I learned to reframe my value and motivation for the role in front of me, everything changed.
The “overqualified” objections disappeared.
And I started getting offers.
If you’ve been told you’re “too experienced”, you’re not too much.
You’re just not positioning your amazing experience the right way.
👉 Let’s fix that.
