The mistake I made after being laid off

When I was laid off during an economic downturn, I thought I had the right support.

My employer provided outplacement support, which included a resume re-write and a coach, and I was super grateful for it.

I thought it would be enough.

But six months later, I’d had exactly one interview, for a role that wasn’t a fit for me.

I wasn’t sitting around, I was following the advice I was given and making it my job to get a new job.

But the strategies I was shown at that time were outdated and ineffective for a mid-career professional at the senior level I was at.

Here’s what I wish I’d done sooner:

  • Worked with someone who understands the current hiring landscape. Outplacement programs and coaches mean well and can be super helpful. But many don’t specialize in helping mid-career professionals or executives stand out in today’s market.
  • Positioned my experience strategically.
It’s not about listing everything you’ve done, it’s about curating your results that are relevant for the position you want now.
  • Understood the exact way to position my experience in my resume and LinkedIn profile to attract opportunities to me. If you’ve been laid off, or looking for your next level role and your search just isn’t going anywhere, know that the right support can make all the difference.

You don’t have to waste months like I did 🤦‍♀️

Having support from someone who’s been in your shoes, and knows the strategies that work today can save you time, money and energy!

If any of this hit home, and you’re wondering what a more modern, targeted approach could look like for you, let’s talk.
