“I can’t send the offer until you accept the salary” say this instead

There’s a moment in the interview process that catches a lot of people off guard.

You’re excited about the role. And the recruiter says something like:

“I can’t send the offer until you accept the salary.”

It sounds simple.

But it puts you in a subtle pressure situation.

And most mid-career professionals respond the same way.

They say:

“Okay.”

Not because they’re fully comfortable with it.

But because they don’t want to slow things down or risk losing the offer.

This is where things can start to work against you.

Because once you say yes before seeing the full offer, it becomes much harder to ask questions or negotiate later.

There’s a better way to handle this.

Here’s what I recommend.

Step 1: Pause and redirect

“I’m excited to move forward.
Can we walk through the full compensation package so I understand everything before confirming?”

Step 2: Get the full picture

Before agreeing to anything, make sure you understand:

• Bonus structure and eligibility
• Health benefits and coverage
• PTO policy and rollover rules
• Equity, RSUs, or stock options
• Start date flexibility
• Remote work or relocation support

A lot of the value in an offer sits outside of base salary.

Step 3: Buy yourself time

After the walkthrough:

“This is exciting. I want to review everything carefully and I’ll get back to you tomorrow.”

If they push:

“I appreciate the urgency. I’ll have an answer within 24 hours.”

This approach does a few important things:

• You don’t commit too early
• You keep the conversation collaborative
• You protect your ability to negotiate
• You avoid having to backtrack later

You’re not delaying.

You’re making sure you understand what you’re agreeing to.

And at this stage in your career, that matters.

Moments like this are just one part of the process.
