To say that the market is strange right now is putting it mildly.

I spoke with a successful mid-career professional this week (I’ll call him Mark to protect his privacy).

Mark applied to over 1000 roles over the last 6 months, landed only 5 interviews, and zero offers.

He took a lot of action, but the outcome wasn’t successful.

He got a 0.5% response rate, below average which is usually 2 to 4% for online job applications (although lately, it seems to be more at the 1% mark).

It’s clearly not working and it’s not his fault.

Many experts feel the hiring process is broken and solutions are… complicated. I agree.

And it pains me to see the frustration, anxiety and even despair that’s generated from all of this with talented professionals unable to land a new role or move into a more fulfilling one.

What should you do if you’re actively looking for a new role and spinning your wheels?

The first thing is to diagnose your search, take a hard look at the data.

The data leaves clues.

In the case of Mark, the data pointed to an issue with his resume.

I took one look at it and noticed his resume was shutting him out of the hiring process.

➜ It was not ATS-friendly.
➜ It had few tangible, measurable results.
➜ It failed to demonstrate he had the required qualifications for the role he wanted.

The good news is that this is fixable.

Will revamping Mark’s resume be the only step needed to completely turn around his job search.

No.

But it’s a crucial first step.

When we diagnose a search, we’re able to define the next, best steps to reset.

While we’re still having to work through a tough hiring process at the moment, there’s still much that we do control.

And, today, I’m going live with my masterclass:
